Villarreal vs Athletic Bilbao Match Preview

Home » Villarreal vs Athletic Bilbao Match Preview

Villarreal would be looking to get back to winning ways after their 2-1 loss against Eibar the last time out and they would be hoping that their home crowd can spur them on to win this game.

Athletic Bilbao who is just a point behind their hosts would also be looking to a win that would see them win two straight games, but their away form hasn’t been the best this season.

Villarreal is the second-highest scorers in the whole of Spain this season, but their defence hasn’t exactly been on their best behaviour so far. They haven’t lost a home league game this season and they have also won their last 3 home games.

Athletic Bilbao won their last league game 3-0 against Espanyol, but their overall recent form doesn’t make for good reading.

That win over Espanyol was their first win in 6 games. They also have a terrible away record this season and would visit Villarreal with no wins on their five travels this season, losing two of those matches.

Team News

Villarreal doesn’t have any major injury absentee in this game with Alberto Moreno and longterm injury absentee, Bruno Soriano the only players unfit.

Athletic Bilbao also has just Beñat Etxebarria as their injury absentee and should be able to field their best 11 in this game.

Head To Head

These teams have met each other 40 times before now. Villarreal has won 17 games while Athletic Club has won 12 with the other games ending in a stalemate.

Villarreal however, had the better of Athletic last season as they won one drew the other game. The last two times Athletic have also visited Villarreal, they haven’t lost, picking up a win and a draw in the process.

Team Form

Villarreal’s lost to Eibar on Thursday brought to an end a run of two straight wins and three games without a defeat. Since they lost at Osasuna at the start of October, they haven’t lost a league game before Thursday. The host also hasn’t lost a game at home all season, winning 3 of 4 home games.

Athletic Bilbao was also on a run of three games with no losses before they were beaten 2-0 by Atletico Madrid on the 26th of October, that remains their only loss in their last 5 games.

Betting Preview

Villarreal would be looking to continue their fine run of form in front of their home fans when Athletic Club comes to town. Losing to Eibar would have affected them, but they come alive when they play in front of their home fans and we expect them to get another win here.

Athletic Bilbao isn’t having a bad season either but their poor away form means they are there for the taking and would be fortunate to share the spoils in this game.

Only Levante has stopped Villarreal from scoring at least two goals at home this season and five of their last 7 league games have all ended in over 2.5 goals scored.

Athletic Bilbao has tried to be tough to break down when they play away from home but conceded twice against Atletico Madrid and we expect them to put up an interesting fight here but Villarreal would still have their way with goals.

With Villarreal turning their home into a fortress, we expect another home win here and over 2.5 goals scored.

Karl Toko Ekambi has been in fine form too and could be a good choice for anytime goal scorer.
