Chelsea are fancied to claim maximum points again on the road but Newcastle might put up some staunch resistance when they welcome the Blues.

Venue: St James’ Park

Newcastle ended a run of five games without any win when they blew away Rochdale 4-1 in their FA Cup replay here on Tuesday, the first time they managed more than three goals in a game since May 2019.

Matty Longstaff, Miguel Almiron and Joelinton all got in on the party and manager Steve Bruce will surely have been pleased with such ballsy performance as they prepare for an even sterner test with the the visit of Chelsea.

Chelsea meanwhile, come into this one on the back of a 3-0 win versus Burnley last weekend, keeping a clean sheet for the second game running in all competitions.

That said, only leaders Liverpool have earned more league wins on the road this term than Chelsea, and one would expect the same outcome when the Blues travel to Tyneside.

Team news

More than a few players are still missing for Newcastle (at least nine) but the return of Jamaal Lascelles will come as a big boost.

DeAndre Yedlin, Fabian Schär, Yoshinori Muto, Allan Saint-Maximin and Ki Sung-Yueng are nearing their returns but this game will come too soon.

For the Blues, Christian Pulisic is out surely while Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N’Golo Kanté and Marcos Alonso are all doubts for this one.

Head to Head

This will be the 166th competitive meeting between the two teams, with Chelsea having won 72 to Newcastle’s 53. 40 games ended as stalemates.

Match stats

There have been over 2.5 goals scored in five of Newcastle’s last six home league games.

Chelsea have won six of their last seven games against Newcastle in all competitions.

Team form

Newcastle have had a quite poor run of results in fairness, and the cup win versus Rochdale was the first in a run of six games since December 2019(W1, D2, L3).

Chelsea are very much better on form, having gone four games unbeaten now, including winning three in that run. Chelsea’s last five games in all competitions (LWDWW)

Suggested bets

Chelsea have a good chance to put the pressure on second placed Leicester City with another ‘dead-cert’ win here, but I’d be looking at making value from the goals market. 7/10 for over 2.5 goals is worth backing, with Chelsea most likely to score a couple while you wouldn’t want to bet against the Magpies also finding the net too.

I will also be tempted to attach a correct score for this game, and will be taking precise looks at an away 1-2 win for 15/2, or an away 1-3 win for 12/1. It is after all, within reason to postulate that Chelsea will come away victorious from this clash, and could see one of these scorelines suffice in their favour.
