Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid host struggling Leganes on Sunday lunchtime as they look to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Eibar last time out in La Liga.

Atletico Madrid v Leganes – La Liga

Venue: Wanda Metropolitano Stadium

Date: 26/01/20

Kick Off: 11:00

TV Channel: La Liga TV

Simeone’s title challengers suffered another set back last weekend against lowly Eibar, and he will be keen for his side to recover as they take on another of La Liga’s bottom-end sides in Leganes, who are languishing in 19th position. Midweek saw another shock defeat in the Copa Del Rey, and the pressure will be beginning to build on the Argentine.

Goals have been hard to come by for both teams, and it was the same old story for Simone’s men against Eibar last weekend, as his side missed a number of guilt edged chances, whilst Eibar took theirs, in a game that finished all square on the expected goals charts.

Diego Costa’s untimely injury has added further pressure to the struggling forwards, and Atletico have only scored a measly 22 goals this season, despite an xG of 33.76. The worst offender has been Alvaro Morata, and he is in desperate need of support up top, as youngster Joao Felix takes time to adapt to his surroundings in Madrid, and hasn’t hit the heights expected of him since his much-talked about summer move from Benfica.

Despite their struggles up front, they will be confident of at least keeping a clean sheet against Leganes, who themselves are suffering a torrid time in front of goal. With only 16 goals to their name this season, Atletico’s defensive record reads for impressive viewing, with only 14 goals conceded at an xGa at 15.68. Further to their struggles up top, Leganes have recently lost a quarter of their goals for the season with Youssef El-Nesyri departing, and it has increased the pressure on Oscar Rodriguez and Martin Braithwaite to perform for Javier Aguirre’s side.

Both the underlying statistics, and tactical nature of both sides means this doesn’t have the feeling of a thriller come Sunday lunchtime, and with Atletico’s problems breaking down sides that perform a low-block tactic, such as Leganes, it could mean Atletico are going to require a patient approach on Sunday.

Team News:

Atletico Madrid are expected to be without Diego Costa, Thomas Lemar, Koke and Jose Gimenez, whilst Kieran Trippier is a doubt.

Ruben Perez is suspended for Leganes, whilst Alexander Szymanowski and Dimitrios Siovas will miss out with injuries.

Head to Head:

Atletico Madrid Wins: 5

Draws: 3

Leganes Wins: 0

Match Stats:

Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their seven La Liga meetings with Leganes, conceding just once in that run.

Leganes haven’t scored in their last three La Liga away games.

Leganes have only managed 16 goals in their 20 La Liga games this season.

Team Form:

Atletico Madrid: W W D L L

Leganes: W D W L W

Suggested Bets:

When considering the goal tallies and underlying statistics of both sides, it is hard to see a game where the goals will flow. Atletico’s defence has suffered in recent weeks, but they will be confident of shutting out a Leganes side who are in worrying form themselves in front of goal. Both teams not to score is understandably short at 1/2, but if doubled up with Atletico to win, it should offer up some extra value.

Despite his struggles in front of goal, Alvaro Morata is still getting the chances going forward for Atletico, and he does suit the tactical set up Simeone is implementing. Priced at 11/10, he should see plenty of chances on Sunday, and he is fanciful to take one of them. The lack of other goalscoring options for Atletico is a worry, but the Spanish striker should end his struggles on Sunday.
