Man United vs Newcastle United – Premier League 2018/19

Venue : Old Trafford

Date : Saturday, 6 October 2018

Kick-off : 5:30 PM

TV channel : BT Sport 1

Jose Mourinho has been a subject to criticism in recent weeks, with many fans upset and angered by his tactics following the goalless draw against Valencia in midweek.

This is not the first time Jose Mourinho has been under so much pressure, shades of Chelsea’s 2015-16 season. There have been even rumours of Man United already looking for a new manager with early contacts with Zinedine Zidane but Mourinho is sticking to his words and believes the Red Devils can turn their season around.

Man United under Jose Mourinho have a defensive style of play. Jose usually starts with two defensive midfielders to hold the play and Paul Pogba to help in attack. However, we have seen in times Pogba isn’t consistent in matches and that leaves the team with no creativity in midfield. In that case, Man United tend to attack the wide positions with fullbacks Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia drilling crosses towards Lukaku. In late game, the players are instructed to move forward and the fullbacks provide long balls in the penalty area in the hope of finding a teammate. However, there is a very less chance of the ball finding the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United also have their own troubles as they drop to the relegation zone so early in the season.

The Magpies have won none of their first seven games in the Premier League and currently place on 18th with just 2 points to their name. However, with Jose Mourinho under pressure, Rafa Benitez would like to make the most out of it.

Newcastle United also play in a defensive formation with Jamal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark holding the backline for them. In Midfield, Jonjo Shelvey remains their main player serving the forwards with through balls and key passes. The wide midfielders will play a key role in making the runs and supplying the forward, Joselu, with low crosses for him to finish it off.

The Red Devils are expected to start in 4-3-3 formation with Rashford Lukaku Mata upfront. Alexis Sanchez seems to have lost his place in the starting 11 after some disappointing performances and is rumoured to leave the club as early as January.

The Magpies are expected to start in a 4-4-2 formation with Joselu and Ayoze Perez upfront.

Head to Head :

Man United and Newcastle have come face to face 166 times with the Red Devils having registered 84 wins to their name. Newcastle have been victorious 42 times and 39 draws between the two sides.

Match Stats :

Man United have lost just one out of their last 36 home games against Newcastle United (W26 D9), the only being a 1-0 defeat under David Moyes in December 2013.

Jose Mourinho has won all seven of his home matches against Newcastle in all competitions, with his side scoring 18 goals and conceding just one.

Newcastle, who won 1-0 against Man Utd back in February, haven’t won back to back league matches against the Red Devils since October 1972.

Rafa Benitez has won six of his last 9 matches against Man United in all competitions (D1 L2), including two wins at Old Trafford at that time (4-1 with Liverpool in March 2009 and 1-0 with Chelsea in May 2013).

Team Form :

Man United have been in poor form in recent weeks having drawn 0-0 with Valencia in midweek following a 3-1 defeat to West Ham last weekend. The Red Devils are placed in 10th position in the league table with 10 points to their name. They are already nine points behind table-toppers Man City and face a huge challenge in reaching the Top 4.

Betting Preview :

Both teams’ head into this clash at Old Trafford in poor spirits following bad runs of form. United are winless in four games in all competitions, while the visitors have failed to win any of their eight competitive games this season, suffering six defeats in the process.

United head into this game as favourites and we are backing a home win, simply because the Magpies recent form has been woeful. Newcastle’s away record of one win in their last 11 Premier League games on their travels does not exactly bode well for an away victory either.

The one ray of hope for the visitors is that United have failed to win in their last four games at Old Trafford. They have not gone five games without a home win in 28 years.

When it comes to goals, this game seems unlikely to be a high scoring one, which is why we are backing under 2.5 goals. The Red Devils have scored just three times in their last four home games, while Newcastle have scored twice in their last six away games. Those stats put together suggest a low scoring encounter.

Romelu Lukaku as an anytime scorer is based on a gut feeling. The Belgian striker has looked jaded in recent games and has not scored in his last five appearances. However, Lukaku is not a player who is far from the goals usually, as he has scored four top-flight goals this season, so he looks like the best bet to find the net in this clash.

Suggested Bets :

Under 2.5 goals @ 10/11

Manchester United to win @ 4/9

Romelu Lukaku to score anytime @ Evens
