Man City vs Tottenham – Premier League 2019/20

Venue : Etihad stadium

Date : Saturday, 17 August 2019

Kick-off : 5:30 PM BST

Man City have shown early signs of what they can do this season when they demolished West Ham 5-0 in the opening weekend. Spurs, meanwhile, had a close competition with Aston Villa until the closing moments of the game where Harry Kane scored two goals in quick succession to give Spurs the three points.

What makes Man City the most dominant side in England is not only down to having a great 11 players but the fact that City have the best squad depth in England and in Europe. This was again demonstrated against West Ham where Pep chose to play Riyadh Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus, who for most part of the season were on the bench. Gabriel Jesus returned the faith by scoring a goal while Mahrez chipped in with two brilliant assists. When you look at other sides like Liverpool and Tottenham, they do have a great set of players but the squad depth is where they lost the title. Spurs realizing that, have made some good key signings to their squad including the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovanni Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon which puts them a squad closer to closing the gap with Man City.

Man City are expected to lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with Sterling, Aguero and Bernardo Silva expected to lead the line. The midfield trio is expected to involve new signing Rodri, David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne. Meanwhile, Spurs are expected to lineup in a 4-3-1-2 formation with Harry Kane and Lucas Moura leading the line. Tanguy Ndombele could be featured once again while Christian Eriksen’s pushing for a starting spot after his impressive cameo against Aston Villa from the bench last weekend.

Head-to-Head

Man City and Spurs have met 44 times in the Premier League with Spurs being the dominant side with 23 wins. The Citizens have been victorious 15 times with six draws between both sides.

The last encounter between both sides resulted in a 1-0 for Man City both at home and at Wembley with Riyad Mahrez scoring the only goal at Wembley and Phil Foden doing the job at home for the Citizens.

TEAM NEWS

Man City

Leroy Sane remains the only long-term absentee and apart from that City have a clean bill of health.

Benjamin Mendy is back in training but after being in and out of the team from the last two years due to injuries, he needs to do a lot of training before he can play. This means another start for Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Fernandinho is also back in contention which gives Pep the option to play the Brazilian powerhouse when needed.

Tottenham

Juan Foyth (ankle) and Dele Alli (thigh) remain injured while Ben Davies is on still working on his recovery.

Heung-Min Son remains suspended till 25 August, so expect Lucas Moura to start again alongside Harry Kane.

Christian Eriksen is pushing for a start after making an instant impact against Aston Villa last weekend, it remains to be seen if Mauricio Pochettino includes the Dane or plays the same lineup from last week.

Player Form

Raheem Sterling has started the season on fire scoring a hattrick against West Ham in the opening weekend. The former Liverpool man has made his intentions clear as he aims for another good scoring season. The final passes behind his goals were played by Riyadh Mahrez. The Africa Cup of Nations winner spent most of his time on the bench last season but is determined to fight for his place with Bernardo Silva. With Leroy Sane injured, this opens up the opportunity for Mahrez to do his magic. Someone who also spent most of his time on the bench beside Mahrez was Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian endured a drop in form earlier in the season which gave Sergio Aguero the nod ahead of Jesus. But this season, Jesus has hit the ground running and both strikers scored against West Ham in the opening weekend. Being aware of Pep’s rotation roulette don’t be surprised to see Sterling start ahead of them both.

For Tottenham it’s their main man Harry Kane who scored a brace against Aston Villa to clinch the game for Spurs. The England captain doesn’t have a good scoring record in August but this season he looks ready. Another player who’s ready is Tottenham’s new signing Tanguy Ndombele. We know that the players coming from Ligue 1 need time to adjust in the Premier League due to the different pace and physicalities of both leagues. That was certainly not the case for Ndombele as he scored the all important equaliser which shifted Spurs’ momentum and they were able to win the game.

Tottenham

Despite Man City being favorites, Spurs can give some tough competition to the Citizens. Tottenham, who went all the way upto the final of the UEFA Champions League despite not signing a single player last season have made some strong additions to the squad this term.
