Napoli travel to Liverpool in amongst a crisis in Naples, as unrest begins to grow under Carlo Ancelotti’s reign, with off-the-field politics taking over.

Liverpool v Napoli – Champions League Group E

Venue: Anfield

Date: 27/11/19

Kick Off: 20:00

TV Channel: BT Sport

Both sides just need a point for qualification heading into Wednesday’s clash at Anfield, however Liverpool will be keen to wrap up top spot ahead of a busy December, and are in a great position to do so.

The formbook makes for grim reading for Ancelotti’s side, as they come into the game without a win in six following a disappointing draw with AC Milan on Saturday. Napoli will be fully aware of Liverpool’s fixture congestion, which could see a weakened side head to Salzburg and heap the pressure on the Italians getting a result against Genk. As a result, it would be no surprise to see Ancelotti set his side up to defend and hit Liverpool on the break, something they did expertly in the Reds only defeat this season.

As ever, key to Liverpool’s attack will be the use of their full backs, with Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to provide the width in attacks, and allow Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to drift centrally. This worked a treat against Crystal Palace for their opening goal on Saturday, and with Napoli lining up 4-4-2, it would be surprise to see Liverpool try exploit these overloads once again.

Chance creation has been an issue in particular for Ancelotti’s side in recent weeks, and their xG has gradually dropped off as the season’s worn on, and this is a worrying trend ahead of a trip to Anfield. However, Liverpool have shown vulnability to counter attacking football, and Napoli are well equipped to challenge the English side in this sense. Insigne will be a big miss however, and Jose Callejon put in an under-par performance on the weekend, so a return to form for a number of Napoli players will be required as the pressure starts to mount on Ancelotti.

Liverpool will be confident of getting the three points they require to top the group, and the injury worries which have added up for Napoli may take their toll, particularly up front with Milik and Insigne expected to miss out.

Team News:

Xherdan Shaqiri and Joel Matip are doubts for Liverpool, however Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson could return on Wednesday night.

Suggested Bets:

The connotations of the group mean Napoli will favour a tight game and look to sit deep, meaning Liverpool will need to be patient in their attacking. Despite this, it is hard to see past Jurgen Klopp’s side, who are on red hot form themselves. Priced at 4/9, it is a tight price, but it is hard to see past the Liverpudlians in this one.

The goals markets are very tight, so I’d be tempted to move into the goalscoring markets. All of Liverpool’s front three are priced above evens, so it becomes a matter of selecting which one takes a fancy to score anytime. Sadio Mane continued his impressive form, and coming up against Di Lorenzo at full back and Callejon’s questionable defensive contribution, he is well placed to score once again. Priced at 5/4, he takes a fancy.
