Cheltenham Racecourse Guide

Home » Cheltenham Racecourse Guide

Jumps racing has made Cheltenham a household name, and every March, the town plays home to the world-famous Cheltenham Festival, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Champion Hurdle, the Champion Chase, and the Stayers’ Hurdle make up the four events that traditionally serve as the championships. Other important race days are the Cheltenham Showcase Meeting in October and the Cheltenham November Meeting. Both of these events take place at Cheltenham.

The racetrack is situated in a picturesque site in a natural amphitheatre immediately below Cleeve Hill, and it has the ability to accommodate almost 70,000 spectators. In addition, the racecourse has its very own steam railway station, which bears the same name. However, this station is not connected to the national rail network; rather, it is a part of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, which enables attendees to arrive at the racecourse via steam-powered transportation. The Old Course and the New Course are two distinct racecourses that run concurrently beside each other on the main racecourse. When it comes to steeplechases, the New Course offers a longer run-in and a more challenging downhill fence than the Old Course does. The majority of the hurdles in a race that is longer than two miles and takes place on the New Course are jumped early in the race, and just two hurdles are vaulted in the last seven furlongs of the race. This is a very unusual aspect of these events. In addition, Cheltenham is home to the sole cross-country track in all of British racing. This course has a variety of peculiar obstacles, most of which are located the inside the ordinary courses.

Cheltenham Festival Course:
In 2022, the Cheltenham Festival will be divided into two parts: the first two days will be held on the Old Course, while the third and fourth days will be held on the New Course. Both courses play to the left and are generally challenging, but some small distinctions between them may be significant in the long run. The Old Course, which is where the Champion Hurdle and the Queen Mother Champion Chase take place, features a run-in that is a little bit shorter and places a little bit more of an emphasis on speed. The New Course, which is home to the lengthier Stayers’ Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup, places an increased premium on the endurance of a horse. This may result in a dramatic shift in the order of finish as the field makes its way up the legendary Cheltenham hill.

Travelling to The Cheltenham Festival
Those who would rather leave their cars at home may do so with ease, thanks to the city of Cheltenham’s convenient public transportation options. The town is serviced by the Cheltenham Spa Railway Station, which can be found on the major route between Bristol and Birmingham. It is possible to take a direct train to Cheltenham Spa from as far away as Aberdeen, thanks to the location of the station on the Cross-Country line. Trains coming from the Midlands and the South East stop at the station on a regular basis.

Cheltenham Festival tickets
Tickets to the Cheltenham Festival are in high demand; however, it is possible to get tickets on the day of the event for the races that take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday as part of the Festival. The tickets may be more expensive on the day of the event. As a result of the fact that Friday is the day of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it is common for the day to sell out in advance. As a direct consequence of this, booking reservations are strongly recommended.

What to wear at Cheltenham Festival
The Cheltenham Festival is a horse racing event that is comparable to Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood. However, the Cheltenham Festival is generally regarded as a social occasion on a different scale than Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood. This is because the Cheltenham Festival occurs later in the year on the calendar, and National Hunt racing has a more agricultural background. The Cheltenham Festival is equivalent in terms of the racing event that it hosts, but it is different in terms of its social event. There is no Royal Enclosure in Cheltenham, and the dress code often calls for coats and flat hats rather than tails and fascinators. This is because flat hats are easier to wear. The atmosphere in Cheltenham is noticeably less formal, and one should feel free to come dressed in whatever one feels most comfortable in.

It is possible that the makeup of the crowd at the Cheltenham Festival is also responsible, at least partly, for the usually laid-back feel associated with the Festival. Cheltenham is, without a doubt, the most well-known Anglo-Irish sporting event that takes place throughout the course of the calendar year, and each year, thousands of Irish fans make the journey across to Cheltenham to witness the races. In most cases, members of the Irish community are most visible in the Guinness Village, which is situated just adjacent to the primary grandstand for the event in question.
