We are surely in for a treat at the Emirates when Arsenal welcome Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for this league game which have all the trappings of an attack-flair clash.

Premier League 2019/2020
Date: Sunday, 15th December
Kick off: 16: 30
Venue: Emirates Stadium
TV Channel: Sky Sports

Yet again, the optimism is gradually building for Manchester City after some tough results in recent weeks. Draws to Shakhtar Donetsk and Newcastle United were not meant to be for a team of their ilk and when their city rivals, United dealt them another blow last weekend, there was a feeling the Citizens have lost their fear factor.

But they rallied back, and have swiftly put those fears to bed with a 4-1 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb in midweek to ensure smooth passage to the Champions League knockouts as group winners. That was their second successive 4-1 win on the road, having bagged four at Burnley prior to the loss to the Red Devils.

They travel to North London trailing second placed Leicester City by six points, and a further eight to Liverpool means they will not be reeling in the deficit any time soon. However, they have a chance to salvage some of the lost pride with a rousing performance against an Arsenal team that have struggled to get going since the sacking of erstwhile manager Unai Emery.

The Gunners came from behind to beat West Ham 3-1 on Monday in what was Freddie Ljunberg’s first win since taking interim charge but their defensive deficiencies remain as clearly exposed by Standard Liege who made them work for a point in their 2-2 draw in their Europa League midweek.

Scintillating teenager Bukayo Saka was the standout performer from that affair in Liege yesterday, scoring one and set up Alexandre Lacazette for the other, and he could yet prove the scourge of City should Ljunberg choose to unleash the Englishman again here.

Team news

Arsenal

Arsenal have had to deal with a lengthy injury list this period, which have seen Ljunberg blood in some youth players from the Hale End Academy. Kieran Tierney, Héctor Bellerín, Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos are all expected to miss out for the Gunners through varying injury worries.

Nicolas Pépé and Rob Holding are also doubts.

Manchester City

City have had a fair share of the injuries, and thus Leroy Sané Aymeric Laporte, Sergio Agüero and John Stones all remain out.

Ederson missed out on the trip to Zagreb but could return here but David Silva is rated touch-and-go.

Head to head

Arsenal’s 97 wins from their last competitive meetings stands out remarkably to City’s 55, and 45 games have been drawn. City have won all of the last most recent five, however.

Match stats

There have been over 2.5 goals scored in Arsenal’s last four league games.

There have been over 2.5 goals in nine of their last eleven games between these two sides in all competitions.

Man City have been winning at both half time and full time in their last 5 matches against Arsenal in all competitions.

Team form

Arsenal have shown recently that they can be an exciting attacking outlet when they get going but remain suspect at the back, and can be caught out by sustained attacking pressure. They have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 13 games in all tournaments. Arsenal’s last five games in all competitions (LDLWD)

Manchester City are faring better, as regards getting the victories but have also been let down by some criminal defending. As a result, they have yet to keep out their opponents in any of their last ten games too. Manchester City’s last five games in all competitions (DDWLW)

Betting preview

Taking into closer consideration the porousness of the two defences on show here, there is a chance of a goal-frenzy and could be a case of who outscores the other. Both teams to get on the scoresheet is priced short at 1/2 but the over 3.5 market is also worth taking a look at for 10/11.

With most of City’s front men on short goal scoring prices, backing Arsenal’s goal getters thus takes an appeal, so Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score anytime at 6/4 is worth your money in this regard.
